Pet o' the Month

Sorry, we are unable to add any new Pets 'o the Month at this time. Our new website debuts in August--Woo Hoo! Don't worry, we'll resume our schedule just as soon as we can so your little punkins and petunias get their month of fame!

April's Pet o' the Month...Bear

Truly, we are in the presence of greatness. Bear is famous, indeed. He is seen here sporting the Perl Grey "Elmira" kit that his proud mom, Amanda, recently knit. I have, of course, informed Adrienne and Kathryn of Perl Grey and Fleece Artist, of their newest model, and they love him too. Bear is also a recent winner of the "I Did A Run" in Lake Tahoe where he lives with his family.

March's Pet o' the Month...MacLeod

OK, so he's Scottish instead of Irish, he's still festive! Known as "Mac Man" to his parents, this little guy is a cutie. He visits the shop often, sometimes with a few of his friends from Scherer Scottish Terriers too. His favorite activities include hogging the bed by laying parallel to the headboard and chasing/catching his own tail. He will be 10 years old this month too! Happy Birthday to Ewe!

February's Pet o' the Month...JUANA

For February we're sending out lots of love and best wishes to a very special dog, Juana. Her owner came in a few months back and we got to chatting about the lovely, yellow lab. She is a retired guide dog, and now works as a therapy dog alongside her owner who works at a local hospice. As if that wasn't enough to endear her forever to my heart, I noticed Juana had a little shaved spot on her left side. I asked if she had recently had surgery, and her owner said she had been undergoing some radiation treatments--at the same clinic (Portland Veterinary Oncology) as my dear Ollie and Hardy (see below). It turns out we all share the same doctor, Dr. Juliana Cyman, who, along with Kelly and an awesome staff, is a miracle worker with pets. We are truly blessed to have found them in our time of need because the care our little, loved ones receive at the clinic is second to none. So here's to you, Juana, for all the wonderful work you do, may you have the best of luck, lots of love, and a very speedy recovery!

January's Pet o' the Month...BAILEY

Oh, just look at this sweet, little face! Bailey is our cover girl of the month. She is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, only 7 months old, and her little tail wags so fast that it wiggles her whole body. She loves the peanut butter treats she gets at the shop, but snubs them at home. She also has the cutest little brown spot on the top of her head that just begs to be smooched!

December's Pet o' the Month...KING TUT

It's hard to imagine that this little sweetie could have had such a rough start in life. He suffered horrific abuse during his first year until he was rescued by a Welsh Corgi organization. From there he found his way into the arms of Patricia where he is now safe and very loved by all who know him. He is a living testament to what a little love can do, and how everyone can make a difference in the lives of stray and abused animals everywhere. Tut is now a happy little guy (with the cutest little tushy you'll ever see), and Tricia wants to steal him. He is truly a gentleman whenever he comes to our shop, and if she breaks the doggy treats into little pieces, he'll actually take them, ever-so-gently, from Tricia's hand. We love you, little cutie!

November's Pet o' the Month...LILLY

This cute little girl is a Coton, and that's just what she is, a wiggly little cotton ball of fluff. Miss Lilly visits our shop often, even when we're closed. We've been told by her mom, Jonelle, that she stops at our doors and peers in to see if we're there even on her morning walks at 7 am! Sometimes she just stops and refuses to move. It must be all the love and treats we shower on her when she comes in. She has become our honorary puppy mascot because she's our most loyal "customer."

October's Pets o' the Month...LUCY and JESSE

These two girls were Dublin Bay's first "customers." Their mom, Pat, brought them by as the Maynard family set up shop late one night in February, 2006. Lucy (on the left) has been a frequent visitor while Jesse romps around at doggie daycare. Both are Portuguese Water Dogs and are the sweetest girls you could ever meet, though they've both discovered where I keep my sandwich in the back room!

WOOF TO EWE!

How did Dublin Bay get started? Well, Hardy and Oliver, of course!

Hardy (more commonly referred to as Pandy) showed up on my doorstep in 1995. A bruiser with bad legs, he turned to mush whenever his name was called. He was known to hug me when I picked him up, and would run as fast as his little legs would take him when it was "tuny time."

Oliver (Ollie Bunny, Ollie Otter Pop, Ollie B, Ollie o' Bunny, Couga Bunny and the list goes on and on) found me at the University of Virginia in the summer of 1991. He was starving and all on his own, scrounging for scraps in the apartment complex dumpsters. My housemates and I tried to get him to come to us for weeks that summer, but to no avail. Finally, one day in August, as I walked home from another boring class, I spied Ollie sitting on his rock. I bent down and called to him, expecting him to walk or run off as he usually did. That day he chose me by running over and jumping into my lap, nearly knocking me over. He's been my true love since that day, traveling with me from one apartment to the next, from Charlottesville, Virginia to Portland, Oregon. I am still convinced that he is the only gentleman to ever come out of the University of Virginia, though that's just one Seattleite's opinion. Ollie has been forever immortalized in my first novel, Oliver Astray in the Emerald City. Though it has gone through two name changes since it was first shopped around to agents and publishers, it will always be that to me, and hopefully, one day it will be published.

One September day in 2002, Hardy was diagnosed with a salivary gland carcinoma — cancer. We spent months in the waiting room of Portland Veterinary Oncology Clinic pursuing radiation treatments and chemotherapy. I'd tried knitting before, but it didn't stick until he got sick. I taught myself on little things like baby booties, just to keep my mind occupied. Hardy would curl up next to me on the couch while I knitted and he healed. We had lots of quiet, quality time there on the sofa that winter.

Sadly, Hardy passed away a year later on December 3, 2003. That same day, Ollie underwent surgery to remove his spleen. He was diagnosed with mast cells — more cancer, and so back to the cancer clinic we went. This time it was chemotherapy and lots more hanging around the waiting room and lots more anxious knitting. Ollie went on to fight off the cancer for the next FOUR YEARS (and counting), and is still with me, for now. His treatments have concluded, and he can have all the tuna he wants. He spends most of his days following sunny patches around our townhouse, but spends every night on the corner of my bed. Lately he's been sleeping on my lap too — Tricia
