Do a gauge swatch with the yarn that you wish to use, match it to one of the gauges and pick a size. When you pick a size, check that the measurements are correct. Keep in mind that kids grow up fast. They can always wear a larger size and grow into it.
This basic pattern is meant to be a starting point for your own creativity in making kid's sweaters. Though the pattern specifies K2P2 ribbing, you can substitute any other edging. A simple garter stitch border is shown on the Christmas button sweater. You can add cables or lace patterns instead of stockinette. Just do your gauge swatch in the pattern stitch you plan to use with the larger needles. If you want a vest, do any of the sweaters without the sleeves and add an edging. Graphed picture designs can be knit in or duplicate stitched afterwards. Go for it! Have fun! That's what kids are for!
